Unwinds are an integral process for converting web materials. Automated splicing unwinds are ideal for nonstop production for web processes. Automated splicing significantly improves productivity while reducing delivered cost.

Flying splice unwind and zero-speed splice unwind with accumulator are two approaches to continuous (non-stop) roll changing in web handling and converting machinery. Both allow the downstream process to keep running while swapping parent rolls, but they differ in mechanics, footprint, available splice types, splice quality, and suitability.

Flying splice unwinds are compact but are limited to a lap splice only. Challenges include missed splices, poor tape quality, splice timing, and excessive tail lengths.

Zero-speed splice unwinds require an accumulator but offer an unlimited combination of splice types with higher quality. Challenges include accumulator tension dynamics and how they may impact web handling.

The objective of this seminar is to give you the fundamental knowledge to provide reliable high-quality splices while using either type of automated unwind.
